Barnyard Buddies Week Two – 5 Senses Camp

Updated: Jun 3, 2018

We started our 5 Senses week with a HUGE rain storm! But that didn’t dampen our spirits! We still found lots of things to see, smell, touch, taste, and hear.

We started off our week with the campers making their very own camp journals to put all their amazing finds – feathers, fur, and wool just to name a few.

While the campers were arriving and parents were signing them in, the kids got to play with the various toys in the classroom!

We collected chicken eggs – the campers loved this – and washed them to put into cartons.    Everyone was so gentle with the eggs! All the eggs survived the wash and were set out to dry before being packaged.  We used our senses to figure out that the eggs were smooth and hard.

For morning snack the campers got Belvita crackers and blueberries on Monday and on Tuesday we made bagel pigs.  They were so adorable and the campers had so much fun assembling all the ingredients!  Everything tasted delicious!

While hiding from the rain on our first day, we also got to see the baby goats, sheep, cow, donkey, llama, mini horse, and pigs!  We used our sense of touch when petting the animals to see whether they were soft, rough, or anything in between.  The campers concluded that the llama fur was soft and the sheep wool was soft and fluffy.

We couldn’t go outside for lunch on Monday because of the rain so we made forts inside that the campers ate their lunch underneath.  They loved it!

To go along with our theme of 5 Senses, we read a book called The Noisy Farmer.  The campers got to practice all of their barn animals noises as we read.  We also read a book that taught our campers a cute barnyard dance!

For our afternoon snack we had smoothies made with kale, banana, blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, honey, and orange juice.  On our next day we also got to make a fun trail mix with M&M’s, pretzels, marshmallows, sunflower seeds, dried cherries and bananas, and rice cereal.  The kids devoured their snacks – they couldn’t seem to get enough!

Later in the week, the sun decided to show up so we got to do more outside activities!

We went out to the garden and got to harvest lettuce and zucchini – smelling the lettuce and even taking a taste once it was all cleaned up.  We also let the kids smell the delicious basil that is growing in the garden.  Yum!

After picking out some delicious zucchini, the campers decorated bags to sell the zucchini in at the farm stand! So cute!

We also went out into the pasture to pick flowers to give to the parents when they came to pick up their happy campers!

The campers participated in a farm animal matching game!

Since the sun was out, we got to take a wagon ride out to a shady picnic spot for lunch!  After the kids finished their lunch, they got to make discovery bracelets, attaching their discoveries in the field – flowers, leaves, rocks, etcetera – to a duct tape bracelet.  This was so fun to watch – they loved exploring!  We also took some paper and crayons to do some bark rubbing on the trees.

Our campers got to pet and groom our wonderful pony, Patches!

Before we had to say our tearful goodbyes to our wonderful campers we walked around the farm to say goodbye to all the animals, petting the baby goats and saying goodbye to the ponies before parents came for pickup.

Our day ended with just enough time to play some parachute games!

We also wrote down many of the things we discovered using our 5 senses so that we could remember all the things we learned.

Of course we took the time to stop and take some adorable group photos!
