On Monday, June 26th, we had our first group of Barnyard Buddies kids come to camp! Barnyard Buddies is a two-day camp for children ages 3-5. This week, we had two amazing groups of campers with us! We could not have been more excited to have these kids at the farm with us! We had a blast doing all sorts of activities – feeding the calves and kid goats, collecting eggs, making delicious and healthy snacks, visiting the garden, playing games, and even more!
Throughout the day we focused on the letter “B”! The campers picked out farm words that we used that started with that letter. At the end of the day, we wrote all those words down on a board to see just how many words we use at the farm start with that letter.
One of the kids’ favorite activities was collecting, washing and counting eggs. Many of the kids wanted their parents to buy eggs at afternoon pick-up because they were so proud! And the parents loved it! While collecting and washing the variety of colored eggs (green, brown, and white), they learned about the difference between food eggs and eggs that hatch into chicks. We only broke a few of the eggs in the process! The kids were very careful when handling them!
Our happy campers also got to feed the calves and two kid goats that live on the farm!
They also got a chance to feed the sheep!
While inside the barn, we got to meet the baby birds – barn swallows!
After our time with the animals in the barn, it was snack time! The kids made delicious homemade fruit snacks. We carefully cut bananas, strawberries, and apples that the kids then put on trays to be placed in the food dehydrator where the fruit dried overnight so we could all enjoy the next day! Everyone loved them!
The campers’ second snack that they assisted in making were some delicious berry smoothies! We blended together frozen strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries with orange juice, ice, and a little bit of kale. They turned out delicious and the campers got quite messy while drinking them!
After snack, we read a fun story about the garden!
For lunch, we took a bumpy wagon ride to a beautiful, sunny spot in the field to have a fun picnic. The kids were ecstatic about riding in the wagon and so happy to explore the farm as we rode to our picnic spot – we saw birds, horses, butterflies, sheep, and made some other fun discoveries on our ride!
After lunch, we ran around with bug nets to collect whatever we could find. We made some bug habitats to put our finds in, but unfortunately were unable to catch any bugs that did not immediately fly away.
Fan favorite – brushing and petting our ponies, Patches and Dozer!
While the campers were not playing with the pony, they rode pretend horses – this was not only fun for the kids, but adorable for the counselors to watch!
At the end of the day, we played some fun parachute games!
We also took time out of our day to take some great group photos of the kids! How cute!
We had an amazing time with all of our campers! It was a great way to start off the summer. We cannot wait for our next group of campers to arrive!
