Greetings everyone and welcome to the first day of Animal & Nature camp! I am Turnip, one of the barn cats here at Bowers. I roamed the farm today to see what campers were up to!
This morning, campers were split into four pepper groups: green, yellow, orange, and red. During the Pepper Party, campers painted a team flag, as well as got to know each other. They also discussed the C.A.R.E.S. contract and acted out each behavior: Cooperation, Attitude, Respect, Empathy, and Safety.
Everyday of camp, the kids have a flag ceremony in which they say the Pledge of Allegiance and the 4-H Pledge. Today, the yellow and red peppers helped raise the flag!
“I pledge my head to clearer thinking, my heart to greater loyalty, my hands to larger service, and my health to better living. For my camp, community, country, and my world.”
Then it was time for animal chores! The yellow peppers fed the calves and milked the goat. Luckily, the campers gave me some of Flo’s delicious milk.
The red peppers learned how to harness and walk horses Mac and Lady. Then, they took them into the barn to feed and groom them!
After lunch, peppers learned the importance of recycling and composting. Each group decorated a bin that they will use to recycle, compost, and dispose of food waste throughout the week.
Campers had fun tie-dying t-shirts. They will get these back to wear this Friday!
For snack today, the peppers made Spider Oat Balls. They took turns measuring and mixing the ingredients. If you want to recreate this recipe at home, follow the recipe card or the recipe listed below!
What a great day here on the farm! Make sure to check back tomorrow to see what the peppers are up to.
